Torre Astura is situated 5 miles south of Nettuno. The sea fortress was built on the site of an ancient Roman port. The tower is pentagonal in shape and surrounded by the sea, it is connected to the mainland by an arched bridge.  In 1193, during a time when the coastline was often threatened by Saracen invaders, a watch tower was built here, at the mouth of the River Astura. It was rebuilt in the mid sixteenth century in the style we see today. This area was known for its great pine forest and coastal dunes.
